What is a Free Radical?
A free-radical is a molecule that has lost a vital piece of itself—one of its electrically charged
electrons that normally orbit in pairs. To restore balance, the free-radical frantically tries to steal
an electron from a nearby molecule or give away its unpaired electron. In doing so, it wreaks
molecular havoc, careening into protein, fat, and the genetic DNA of cells, disfiguring and
corroding them. If the target is fat, the radical can set off wildly destructive chain reactions that
break down membranes, leaving cells to disintegrate. If the radical hits protein, it can destroy the
cell's ability to function. If it hits DNA, it can cause mutations that incite cells to aberrant
behavior. Over time, free-radical damage leaves the body aged and diseased. Each of our cells
endures ten thousand oxidative hits every day from errant free-radicals, but most of these cells
are immediately repaired.
In excess these free radicals can cause tissue and organ damage, they can combine with
innocuous cholesterol into sticky plaque that clogs arteries, they can destroy cell membranes,
the protective covering of cells. They can get into the DNA and inflict damage and thus impair the
body's cell's ability to divide and repair itself. This can lead to a breakdown of the bodily systems.
Many free radicals are produced in our personal environment, such as sunlight, smog, high
altitude, exposure to X-ray, toxins in food and water, pollen, ozone, molds and dust, and so forth.
We can't avoid free-radicals. They are everywhere.
What Can We Do?
Free-radical are rendered harmless by antioxidants. Antioxidants are the “saviors” in this
process. An antioxidant is a substance that can donate a sought-after electron to a free-radical
without becoming dangerous itself. An antioxidant that comes into contact with a free-radical
puts an end to the rampage of cellular and bodily destruction.
Antioxidants—They Can Prolong Life
Antiodxidants literally means “against oxidantion.” Antiodxidants are the good guys that
continually combat the harmful effects of oxidation in the body. They are constantly on duty to
render wayward free-radicals harmless. The net result of their work is that they prolong the life
of cells, and thus, prolong life itself.
Human beings and animals have developed mechanisms that can protect against the formation
of these dangerous byproducts of metabolism. The body produces antioxidants. When an
antioxidant finds a free radical, it grabs hold of it, and escorts it out of the body before it can do
any damage. Chemically it helps to neutralize the free radical by offering their own electrons and
so protect healthy tissue.
Where can you get Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are found in the food we eat. However, foods lose their antioxidant powers when
they are processed and cooked. Stress, air pollution, cigarette smoke and chemicals can cause
your body to produce even more free radicals. Additionally, radiation, ultraviolet light in
sunshine, toxic chemicals, pesticides, excess saturated fats and even the processed foods itself
create more free radicals.
The best bet is to keep your antioxidant level high by eating foods high in the vitamins needed to
create antioxidants.
Another way to control the formation of free radicals is to take antioxidant supplements which
can help restore the proper balance of antioxidants and free-radicals.
Foods: Sprouted grain, organic fruits and vegetables. However it is difficult to get enough of
these from these sources to held back the free radicals constantly being generated in our
polluted environment, processed foods, smoking, etc.
The Value of OPCs
OPCs protect you from approximately eighty diseases, including heart disease, cancer, arthritis,
and most other non-germ diseases that are linked to the deleterious chemical action of free-
radicals … in addition to its antioxidant protection that slows the damage associated with aging.
They restore elasticity and smoothness to skin via its influence on skin protein formation. What is
even more exciting is that they are more than powerful antioxidants—they nourish blood cells,
blood vessels and the skin.
OPCs are unique because they may help alleviate hay fever and other allergies by reducing
histamine production, providing relief for allergy sufferers. They strengthen capillaries, prevent
bruising, improve peripheral circulation, reduce varicose veins, and improve capillary resistance
and permeability. These flavonols are also metal chelators.
