THE AYATE STORY …….


The “Tree of Wonders” as the agave plant is often called, has been
cultivated for thousands of years and over 100 products are made
from it.  This all natural ayate cloth is hand made in a very labor
intensive process.  After agave leaves are cut, they are cooked and
pounded into fibrous strands.  They are then softened under rocks for
up to a week.  One by one each fiber is scraped and washed to
remove any remaining plant debris.  The fibers are then soaked in a
natural lime solution and hung out to dry.  Once dry, they are hand
woven, knitted or crocheted into ayate squares.  These squares can
be used in a variety of everyday uses, including cosmetic purposes.  It
is better than a loofah and a wash cloth because it is mildew resistant.
